Downtown's Next Step
What is the future vision for Downtown Durango?
Downtown Durango’s Main Avenue has experienced a variety of changes over time, especially this past year. Downtown’s Next Step is reinvigorating community conversations regarding the future look and feel of downtown, specifically along Main Avenue between 5th and 14th streets. In response to these conversations, the City of Durango is seeking community input to shape a renewed vision for thriving, inclusive and accessible downtown spaces.

The Community Development Department will lead phase one of the project, which will engage the public in conversations about the re-design of the streetscape and public spaces along Main Avenue. Conceptual designs for changes and improvements will be created through this collaborative process. This effort will consider all the elements of Main Avenue from building face to building face, including patios, sidewalks, street trees and other landscaping, bicycle facilities, vehicle lanes, parking, crosswalks, and more. Phase one is expected to be completed in early 2022. The Transportation Department will lead phase two using the conceptual designs, input and vision statement from phase one to create more-detailed design plans for construction.
The public engagement process seeks to understand the community's values related to the future of Downtown Main Avenue. The process will gather input from a broad cross-section of community members, including residents, employees, business owners and property owners.
The project team gathered community feedback via an online questionnaire Dec. 16, 2021 through Jan. 7, 2022. If you were not able to complete the survey, you can submit any questions or comments regarding Downtown's Next Steps here.
The project team will be using the results of the questionnaire and discussion with a stakeholder group and the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) to form a vision statement and objectives for the conceptual design of Downtown Main Avenue. The community will be asked for feedback regarding conceptual design alternatives and ultimately a preferred design for the corridor. Additional feedback opportunities are anticipated for February and March of 2022.
