Air Quality & Health

Air quality is closely tied to a wide variety of human health concerns. In Colorado, air quality is monitored and regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). View reports, forecasts and other information at www.colorado.gov/airquality.

In general, we are fortunate to benefit from good air quality in Durango. Average levels of pollutants a well below those established by State and Federal agencies as safe to protect human health. However, events such as wildfire can severely impact air quality for certain periods of time.

City of Durango Air Quality Initiatives

The City of Durango is taking steps to ensure that our residents have clean air to breathe by:

  • Encouraging no unnecessary idling for all City vehicles
  • Enforcing an anti-idling ordinance for idling longer than 5 minutes (95 citations for idling were issued during 2017)
  • Converting waste methane gas to electrical energy at the City's Water Reclamation Facility
  • Providing electric vehicle outlets for public use at the Transit Center
